The design of the flag is credited to British sailor Alexander Adams who served the Hawaiin King when he was left behind by his ship. He was put in charge of the Hawaiin Navy and it was during this time the flag was designed. Of course the flag pre-dates the rest of the American States.

The 8 alternating white, crimson and blue stripes characterize the 8 islands of Hawaii. The British Union Jack represents Hawaii's historic dating with great Britain as its protectorate. In 1816, Kamehameha the excellent commissioned the Hawaiian Flag, the flag that has represented Hawaii the rustic, Hawaii the human beings and Hawaii the state for over one hundred eighty years.

This is historical news to me. I thought the last time the Union Jack (Union Flag) appeared on any American flag was the pre-revolutionary flag of the American Colonies, which had the Jack in the top left corner with thirteen red and white stripes. In c1776, the Jack was ripped out and replaced with a circle of thirteen white stars. The rest followed later.

If Roco S is right, then we in the UK should reinstate the old colonial flag, as described above. We would then at least have the thirteen red and white stripes. Nice flag.

Because of its symbolism, the starred blue canton is called the "union." This part of the national flag can stand alone as a maritime flag called the Union Jack (no relation to the flag of the United Kingdom this term more commonly refers to). The Union Jack served as the naval jack for U.S. warships until 2002, when it was replaced by the so-called First Navy Jack as part of the War on Terrorism. However, the Union Jack continues to be used as a jack by U.S. vessels outside the Navy, including those of the Coast Guard and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administrat.
Our flag is called the Union Flag and is only referred to as the Union Jack when used at sea.
