It really depends on whether or not you think you need one. However, I would emphasize that paying attention in class and thinking is the most important thing you can do. Too many students today bring in computers and act like scribes for the duration of a lecture.

It depends on the kind of learner you are. For example, I am an auditory learner. When I hear things, I commit them to memory. Other people are more of a verbal-linguistic learner, and need to type or write the things that they need to remember. As others have said, some people get more concerned with having their laptops with them, and transcribing every word as it is said.

Sometimes its easier just to go the old-fashioned route and jot notes down in a notebook. If you're really concerned, you might also want to tape record the lecture, and then type the notes in the comfort of your own home. This would give you the benefit of hearing the lecture, then letting it sink in again at home.

Word of advice: I made it through a 5-year university program and never brought a laptop to class, and still graduated with honors. Do what works best for you!!! :-)

Depends on the school, but some students and most teachers find the constant clacking of keyboards distracting. If you have a desktop, a spiral notebook, and a pencil or pen that is all you need. Good luck with your classes

No but you may want to buy yourself a small digital recorder to tape lectures. I found that the ones that are middle of the road in price work just fine.

Good Luck with your classes!

Generally speaking if you have the required textbooks and a notebook you're good to go. You may prefer a laptop however.
