The Italian mafia started in Sicily before it was united with Italy, to guard themselves because coutries kept attacking them. The families transfered allies, etc, to the USA when they immigrated here in the late 1800 and early 1900's. It grew mostly in New York and Boston, peaked in the 40's, and has been going downhill since. However, it's unlikely it'll ever entirely disappear.
If you have to ask how to join, you won't be able too! ;) It's all about name and connections.
