My 3rd child had conjestion when he was just a few weeks old. He didn't have a cold, but he was conjested. What I finally figured out was that he was allergic to the cow milk products (dairy) that I was eating, and he was getting through my breast milk.

Once I eliminated dairy from my diet, baby cleared right up. Anytime I re-introduced it to my diet, baby got conjested again. I was off of dairy for over 2 years, while nursing him.

I've heard of many others that have had this same situation. Baby was sensitive to the dairy that mom was eating.

Hope this is helpful. Also, you may want to try propping his mattress up a bit until the conjestions goes away, or letting him sleep in his car seat (in the house, of course). This will put him in a more upright position which would make it easier for him to deal with the mucous until it goes away.

If it is real bad and the baby is choking on the mucous then you can buy a syringe and suction his mouth and give relief. Lay him on his side when he lies down and this will help keep him from choking. Milk creates phlegm and you could try giving water in the bottle after milk has been taken. Good luck young Mom- nothing real serious to worry about here.

Did doc tell you that milk can exacerbate the phlegm problem? I know baby is young, but maybe cut the milk feedings in half and use some pedialyte in place. If you are breastfeeding make sure you pump and store your milk to keep up your supply.

A nice, warm steamy bath. Also, run a humidifier (hot steam, not a cold mist) and stay in the steamy bedroom. Also try adding a tiny bit of eucalyptis oil to the humidifier. You should also prop up one end of the crip so that he isn't lying flat, it'll make it easier for him to breathe.

No, you're not paranoid, you're a good mom.

we always used the steam of a hot shower to help break up the phlegm and one of those suction bulbs to pull it out his nose. Put Vick's vapor rub on your chest and lay the little one on your chest and do light pats on the little ones back to help break up the phlegm. Good luck honey i know that when your little one is ill it can be stressful.
