Current is Georges Laraque with Derek Boogaard nipping at his heels. Boogaards inability to beat big georges so far is reason for my ranking.

All Time: Bob Probert

Currently, I would say Derek Boogaard of the Minnesota Wild. His size makes him a formidable opponent to anyone on the ice.

Overall, names like Joey Kocur and Bob Probert come to mind. Those guys weren't just fighters, they were feared on the ice.

In the old WHL, there was a guy named Goldie Goldthorpe who was the meanest player to ever put on the blades. If you have seen the movie Slapshot, they modeled Ogie Oglthorpe after him.

Another piece of trivia, the Hanson Brothers in the movie slapshot were played by the Carlson Brothers, three thugs from Minnesota who played. At the last minute, Jack Carlson was called up to play in the NHL, and they had to hire a different guy (Dave Hanson) to fill in.

Keep your stick on the ice!

If we're talking past....

Gino Odjick was an ugly son of a biatch and used to get the Pacific Colliseum chanting his name when he fought while he was with the Canucks.

When Mike Kennan came to Vancouver, Gino was traded to the NY Islanders for Jason Strudwick. The Canucks happened to be playing the Islanders that night. Gino's first shift he didn't even look where the puck was he headed straight for Strudwick and beat the crud out of him.

The next season he was up and down from the NHL to the minors, while guest hosting ESPN's "NHL Tonight" he looked into the camera and told Isles GM at the time Mike Milbury that if he sent him to the minors again he would kick the crap out of him.

THAT guy was a character.

Matt Barnaby is a pretty scary guy. I remember back in the day watching Rob Ray and Ty (sp?) Domi fight each other every time the Sabres played the Leafs, now that was good times. I'll say Rob Ray because of the way he used to egg guys on until they hit him first, like once I remember him standing in front of a guy and kept grabbing the guy's nose while the referee just stood there all confused until the guy finally hit him and then Ray beat the crap out of him. Man, old school Sabres...those were the days.

Right now the best fighter has to be Derek Boogaard. Why...because most of the other "tough guys" have had an opportunity to drop the gloves with him this year and so far none has excepted the challenge. I guess it pays to be 6' 7" and 270 lbs with a reputation of crushing opponents in the minors. If there is someone out there right now that could drop them with him my money would be on Donald Brashear...that would be a classic bout.

Stu Grimson and Rob Probert used to tear it up.
Donald Brashear is certainly some1 i wouldn't want to tangle with ethier.
Whoever said Sean Avery doesn't realize the question was best fighter. Sure he starts a lot of fights but he definitely get his *** kicked all the time.

I'm assuming you mean who is the current NHL Heavyweight Champion. Most will say Georges Laraque as I will. Others will say Derek Boogaard. If you mean all-time, then it's Bob Probert. Go to hockeyfights.com

Currently you have to go with George Laraques. Why? Because he always wins. Most people won't even fight him.

All-time is a tough call. You can't go wrong with Bob Probert, though. I'm still afraid of him when I turn off the lights at night.

Donald Brashear (WAS)! He scruffs the opponent by the back of the sweater and shakes him to make him lose his balance, all the while pounding him with a lightning fast left.

Brashear will always throw down the gloves and poor Downey didn't know what he was getting into this week! (Kudos to Downey for not backing down though!)
