Virtual memory is extra memory that is stored on the hard drive. When the computer has to access the extra memory, it starts reading from the drive. This is usually called "swapping"

In Windows your memory settings are shown in the Control Panel -> System -> Advanced.

a computer has so much RAM installed in it, this is where programs which you are running are stored so that they can be accessed quickly. When the computer runs out of space in the RAM it allocates some of the overspill into what is referred to as virtual memory, this is memory on your hard drive which is used in a way similar to RAM although it suffers from much lower speeds. if you have a problem with virtual memory you can probably get around it by upgrading your RAM.

virtual memory is a part of your hard drive that allocated to be used as a temporary storage, just like RAM.
