We just got our first bearded dragon. We have a great set-up. Propre lighting , H2O, greens, crickets and pellets. I have Checked alot of sites but nothing that talks about the eyes. Oz is Eating well. But one eye stays shut most of the time. When he does open it, it does not appear to be ozzing or infected. Bad eye Bill --as his new name ? or is this cause for worry? PS. could the fact that my sons Jam out to Green Day maxed out causing this.
Just kidding.

Hello, Some UVB bulbs are not stable in their UVB output and cause burns to the retinas of the eye (s). The only safe long tubes are the reptisun 5.0, 10.0, iguana light and the reptiglo 8.0. AND mega-ray, powersun, active uv heat mercury vapor bulbs.

Conjunctivitis is another problem that can cause problems with their eyes and that can be caused by bacteria, yeast, or virus and you would need to take it to a vet to be treated as it would need meds to clear.

Is it almost always closed? Lizards will normally keep 1 eye open, 1 eye closed. It is how they sleep sometimes. One eye that is open is to keep watch, the other is closed to sleep. But if the eyes never switch, there may be a problem. Vets can help a bunch. Make sure that person is reliable though. You can email the vet or visit one. I suggest visiting one. In some vets, check ups like this are free.

What kind of substrate are you using? he could very well have a small piece of sand in his eyelid that is scratching him. Rinse out his eye with water; and see if that helps.
It doesnt sound to me like it is the UVB bulb; though this does happen; if one eye is burned; the other would be too. It sounds more like there may be something in it. Lizards will often close one eye to better focus on something they are looking at. But if it is closed all the time; then my first guess would be that there is something in it. Definatly rinse it out; either with water; or pet eye wash. If that doesnt help; a vet visit my be in order.

Maybe he has something in it.
Make a sudden movement on the side of the closed eye and see if he opens it.

Did he get poked in the eye by something? If it's not red or oozing, maybe he hurt it by getting jabbed in the eyeball.

He might be too hot. Check that your lighting isn't on too high to make sure his eyes aren't being burned.
