Ultra suede is available at any fabric store like JoAnns, is like buck skin but very expensive by the yard. Check on line sources.
Chamois cloth is available at auto parts stores and the auto department of WalMart and is a close substitute to deer skin and you can either get real goat skin chamois cloth or a synthetic.
In the south the powwow trail is so hot that some participants choose to leave the buckskin category and join the cloth regalia and make their skins from heavy t shirt jersey.
So, there is my answer, but I would like to know why you gave such a curt and insulting response to an inquiry? Why do you want to make something so nice for your dad, but you think people who wear deer cannot be imagined. It sounded like a put down to people who do. There are a great number of people who preserve their heritage by living it and wearing it.

Only place I can think of is a processing plant during deer hunting season. It will be fresh though so its up to you to treat it.

There are so many great online Native American stores that have not just the skins but also the patterns and supplies.
Try this one:
nativetech.org or indians.org

Check your local phone directory for any leather work places, and see if they can hook you up with any.
