Place tape over the infra red receiver that allows the remote to work or remove the batteries from the remote. Channel surfing is not near as fun if you have to get out of you seat every time you want to see what is on. This at least gives you an opportunity to agree upon the show you want to watch and when the 4 minutes of commercials come on, he will not start flipping the channels after 30's because of a need for visual stimulation. Make out during the commercials and it will take his mind off the TV.

Hide the remote, put TV on station you wont to watch. When he ask were the remote is say I don't know, you had it last. Then see if he gets up to change the station . Hogtie and a sock might lead to more fun than watching TV.

Hide the remote. When he asks where it is, tell him the only way he will ever see that remote again is if he agrees to some sort of fair balance as to who gets to decide what programs to watch on what days, etc.

Compromise... Let him watch one of his shows and then you go next. Or you do it one day and he does the next.... or bribe him, that always works for me:)
