Well I assume you mean the early migrants
Well they journey was hazardous and disease and death was rife Of course it depended on how you travelled.ie1st class thru steerage class.The trip took about a week.From Sicily to New York.
Usually the disembarcation point was Ellis Island.Here the migrants were processed.After clearance by customs and health autherities they were taken by ferry to mainland.

Ellis Island, I guess. They probably came on boats until plane travel was feasible.
