I posted this before and tried their suggestions and still ended up with a mess. There has got to be an easy way to find the end of the yarn in a skein. Help me please

The skein of yarn has on strand that is tucked in which was wrapped from the outside (this unwinds from the outside)... if you see the end it's tucked into go to the other end and fish into the center of the skein to find the inside start of the ball.

Some of the yarn companies have begun putting arrows on the label to indicate the yarn start ... look carefully cause they're easy to miss

Well, all skeins have an end at the outside of the ball, look at how it's wrapped and the last wrap of the yarn on the outside will be one end. If you want to pull from the center of the ball, mucking around with it may get you nothing but a big mess, so simply rewind the ball as a center pull ball. Hold several inches of the end you find in your left hand under your thumb and wind the yarn from the ball around your thumb and first two fingers, without stretching the yarn. Continue to hold the end with your thumb and turn the inital ball 90 degrees and continue to wind around with your thumb at the center. You should be able to leave an opening in the ball that allows you to pull from the center. As you go if you find any knots in the yarn, cut them out now (knitting should never have knots in it) and start a winding a new ball. from there. This also holds true for big slubs or other imperfections in the yarn you find.

Sometimes it is as easy as everyone here has suggested. Other times, you can turn that skein over a million times and never find that strand sticking out.

What I do, is if I absolutely can not find the end, then I cut my own. I can always join the ends together later.

I would suggest that before you buy your yarn, make sure you can find the end. It will save you some time later.

Good luck.

if you look in the top (check both ends) you will find a single stane and if you pull it will just unwind until the end of the skien

look in the center and peel back but do not undo anything, check both sides you will
find one string of yarn end
you pull that and start.
it is easy once you have done that

Let the cat play with it for a while!! ;) Only thing is, you'll never get it untangled again.
