Was wondering where I could buy a tool that would plan the bottom of the door without actually having to take the door off the hinges. I know one exists but just dont know the name of it.

I wish someone would invent one. I had to have two doors on my new house planed and the guy had to remove them and take them outside where he sawed off the ends.

Maybe you could invent such a device. The problem is that it can't tear up the carpet or flooring while it's sawing the bottom of the door.

Contractor for 30 years and I've never heard of such a tool and frankly don't see the need. Why is it difficult to remove the hinge pins and saw off the bottoms? Planing doors is typically done when the door is too wide for the jamb but is seldom done across the wood grain at the top or bottom of the door.

The only tool I could possibly think of that you may be talking about is a saw used by tile and carpet installers. It`s used to cut the bottom of casing to install tile. But this would`nt be a tool you would want to use on the bottom of a door. Take the door down, scribe a straight cut line with a razorknife, cut along side the line. This will reduce or eliminate splintering.
