My little sister just got her period. She can't seem to get a tampon in and she's getting really, really frusterated and she's in tears. What are some easy and different methods that might help her to slide one in.

She WANTS to put in a tampon, I'm not forcing it. She does not want to use a pad anymore.

What are some positions to insert it that might work....besides squatting and one leg up?

Sit or stand in a comfortable position. Some women prefer to place one leg on the toilet seat or tub, while others prefer to squat down. After you find a position that is most comfortable for you, hold the tampon with the fingers that you write with. Hold the middle of the tampon, at the spot where the smaller, inner tube inserts into the larger, outer tube. Make sure the string is visible and pointing away from your body.
With your other hand, open the labia (the folds of skin around the vaginal opening) and position the tampon in the vaginal opening.
Gently push the tampon into the opening, aiming for the small of your back. Stop when your fingers touch your body and the applicator, or outer tube, is completely inside the vagina.
Once the applicator or outer tube is inside of you, use your index finger to push the inner tube (the tube where the removal string is connected) through the outer tube.
Once the inner tube is all the way in, use your thumb and middle finger to remove the applicator or outer tube. Make sure that the string hangs outside of the vaginal opening. Later, when you are ready to remove the tampon, hold the string and gently pull it downward until the entire tampon is out.
If the tampon is inserted correctly, you should not feel it. If you feel uncomfortable in any way, you may have inserted the tampon incorrectly or the tampon may not be placed far enough into the vagina. If this happens, just remove the tampon and start again with a new tampon. Remember that practice makes perfect. If you don't get it on the first try, your second try will most likely be successful. Instead of getting frustrated and giving up, relax and try again!

You've gotta relax which isn't always easy. Try putting one leg up on the toilet while you're inserting it. Some women sort of squat and do it, or just sit on the toilet. It's easy once you get the hang of it. Look at the insert that comes in the box of tampons for an illustration. Good Luck!

tell her to use some lube k-y or something of the like. she needs to be relaxed or that sucker isn't going to go in, as frustrating as it may be she needs to breathe and just stay calm so that her muscles don't tense, this is the same for getting a tampon out. have her prop one foot on the toilet while she is inserting this will help a little. last but not least it takes practice to be a pro at it... she will know when she has it in right b/c she shouldn't even know its there. also please be sure to explain to her that the hole she is putting the tampon in is not the hole she pees out of so she doesn't need to change the tampon before she urinates. ( u would be surprised how many girls don't know that)

first of all, i'd like to say that while there are a few health problems associated with using tampons (such as toxic shock syndrome), cases of these diseases are very rare. so it is perfectly fine for her to use a tampon! a lot of people seem to think that using tampons is highly dangerous, but i disagree. also, i've read that "commercial tampons" (such as tampax and playtex) are especially dangerous. i also read that you should use organic or homemade tampons instead. homemade tampons?? absolutely absurd.
anyway... tell her to relax. also, it might help to use lubricant (like ky jelly) to help it slide in easier. also, it sounds gross, but another thing is to wait until you bleed and then try to put it in because then the area will be uhh slippery which will allow for easier insertion. she should also carefully read the instructions from the box. also, it's a good idea for the tampons she is using to be junior absorbancy for the first few times, just so she can get the hang of it.
i've said my piece.
good luck to both of you!!

She needs to realize first it is not a big deal. Millions of women use them and she will be able to as well. She is making herself all tense and that won't help anything. Breatthing out when she is inserting the tampon will help to release muscles and not make them tight. This might take a few breaths but it is effective. She is making it too hard, just drill in her head it is no big deal.

She is probably tensing up, and just needs to relax. The tampon will not go in if she is clenching and stressed. Also, I would give her the smallest ones you can buy and perhaps a little lubrication would help. I know I was really freaked out when I first started using them! I only started because I really wanted to go swimming!
Good Luck!

It may be simpler to use a pad the first time or two she has a period. Tampons are not for everyone. Here is a website.

You can buy some with an applicator to just push the tampon in and remove the disposable applicator.
This leaves the tampon in place with just the string to pull it out later.

Tell her that Tampons have too many health risks and not to use them. Help her get a product like "instead" or the diva, the keeper or the moon cup.
