I went to go buy some plain white socks today, and my choices were down to one where cotton was the main fabric and another where acrylic was the main fabric. The acrylic one was a dollar more, but I couldn't open the bags to see which one was softer.

Is one better than the other? (Actually, I don't know what acrylic is).

Cotton for sure. Hemp socks are much better if you can find them in this repressed country of ours.

Buy the cotton. It will help keep your feet dry,if they sweat. They will also let your feet breathe. Acrylic will not.
acrylic will retain heat & that is so uncomfortable.
Also, when you wash & dry the acrylic socks, they will shrink; cotton will retain it's size & shape in the wash.

well depends on ur shoes, if its acrylic its for dressy and cotton is for sporty casual more, so anyways i go for the cotton its more comfy than acrylic, acrylic bothers me after a while its soft but i hate the feeling, cotton just is best for me when i sleep and walk on the bare floor and it keeps my toes nice and warm, and makes my feet comfy in shoes

Cotton is wonderful and natural, but for socks, it holds moisture. If your feet sweat, cotton will retain that moisture, and your feet will be swimming.
Same principle as layering for winter. The layer next to the skin is NEVER cotton for that reason.
