I assume you mean the parking brake. You have probably worn down your rear brakes a bit, but that just means you will need rear brakes a bit sooner. Just remember to relese the brake next time. There should be a red warning light on the dash when the parking brake is on.

I am guessing you mean the hand/foot/emergency/parking brake? As I have seen it, the hand/foot/emergency/parking brake is separate from the normal brake system (I believe it works on the rear rotors, not the fronts where most of the normal braking power is). You have probably burned up the parking brake pads pretty good, but that shouldn't affect the normal braking performance of the car unless you have burned through the parking brake pads to the metal (probably would hear that if it happened). The worst would be burnt pads and damaged rotors. Not the end of the world.

By all means, have it checked by a mechanic, but it is probably not that large of a problem.

Yes, you can wear out your brakes by driving with your foot on the brake pedal. This will make you need to have the brakes replaced much sooner than normal. And yes, you'll get that wonderful hot-brake smell.

My recommendation: let the brakes (and your husband!) cool down for an hour or so, then try driving it again -- this time without your foot on the brake pedal till you have to stop. If the car shudders, shakes or pulls from one side to another when you try to stop, then you have damaged something that needs immediate replacement. But most likely, the car will stop normally if you really only drove with the pedal applied for a short distance, and the only damage will be that your brakes may need replacement in 15,000 miles instead of 20,000 or more.

Try teaching yourself to drive using only your right foot -- that is, pick up your foot and put it on the brake rather than having one foot on each pedal.

A short while is no problem. You just probably used a little more on the brake pads than normal. You may need to change the pads at an earlier interval than normal. No big deal. The smell will go away. Reving up the engine has nothing to do with the brakes. Best of luck to you.

first of all it is not a very good practice to do consistantly the smell you smelled was the friction between the break pad and the rotor the pads( depending on the car and the pad composition is probably what u smelled and it is wearing out the break pads on your vehiclebut fortunatly most pads are going to last around 30 -40 thousand miles what you dis was really a drop in the bucket i wouldn't worry unless they are do a change if the pads are low you runthe risk of damaging a rotor the things that the pads press aginst to create the friction that make you stopi suggest you go to howstuffworks.com that way tou understand how they work and from that web site you will be able to tell your hubby a thing or to about breaks
ps padsusally run 15-30$ for the fronts and compairably for the rear

I paid 900 bucks to have my car repaired because apparently the rubber was burnt and got stuck with the other metallic parts and they have to replace the entire thing. I knew I had a problem when the car was squealing with a high pitched sound. I ignored it till I can not stand the squeal anymore and even my neighbours were giving me referrals because they could not stand the noise!!! So take it from me, my car is only three years old and I already changed the windshield three times and now this $900 repair job. No wonder my husband will not allow me to drive the lexus. Did I mention I brought my car to service again because I hit the post with my side mirror and now it has to be replaced. MMM time to buy a new car I suppose.

The car's brakes are designed with duty cycles in mind and can tolerate some serious abuse as long as you let them recover. They will stink to high heaven when pressed but letting them cool off afterwards is what matters.

So you've blundered whilst driving, so what? really, nobody's hurt and if the car cools off OK then no harm at all has been done. I'm more concerned about what you think your husband will do, at worst he should roll his eyes and tut [in the same way that if I put something in the tumble dryer that should not be, my wife would tut at me].

with foot resting on brake pedal brakes are partially applied and depending on how far driven could cause pads and or shoes to fail premature, boil brake fluid and cause temporary lose of brakes, and warp surfaces of rotors and or drums.

Worst that could happen??......You burned out the pads or rotors or drums. There's a lot worse things that you could have done.
