A lot of Ikea furniture is a little smaller because it's mostly European furniture (great for apartments or if you want the crib in the room where there's another bed). However, much of it is solid wood (read description) and they wouldn't be allowed to sell it in the US if it didn't meet US child safety standards.

I personally love them, but prefer to go to the store and actually see the product on display before buying. Sometimes the style is great, but scale may be off from some of the gigantor furniture I've been buying elswhere lately.

the ikea cribs look quite cheap to be honest - as I ahve looked at them in the past.
personally, I would look in 2nd hand shops / NCT meetings / car boots / Ebay - all of which can be bought cheaply and cleaned up and are sturdier and would probably last longer - as long as the matress was new of course.
In Mothercare you can get cots relativley cheaply - think the cheapest is about £70
Just remember your baby will grow and start pulling at the cot so you need to be sure that it is sturdy enough - if your happy with it (give it a good test before you buy it) - then go for it

I don't have one of these cribs, but if you want an inexpensive crib, you might try looking into an Evenflo Jenny Lind Crib. I got mine at Sears for around$ 105.00 and I think it is a good one. I know that it got bad reviews, but I own one and it seems to work well for me. I had bought an used crib(bad idea) before and it was horrible.

I checked out these cribs too when looking to buy one, and the thing I didn't like was how low to the ground they were. They seemed kinda cheap to. But more importantly I didn't want to bend over the rails all the way to the floor to get my baby. If you are looking for a inexpensive crib check out walmart. They are nice and affordable.

The cribs at Ikea didn't seem very deep to me, but maybe they just don't have the mattresses at the lowest setting?

I haven't used their crib but their furniture generally isn't very sturdy. For something that gets as much hard use as a crib, I would steer clear.

Try craigslist.org for great deals on used cribs. For the same money you can have something FAR nicer.

Ikea may be good priced in somethings, but those prices do show through on the quality. Baby furniture is the one thing I think we should not cut corners on....its about saftey not price.
