I wonder why we create self-inflicted despair when simple things in life can make us happy?

There are so many things we learn to take for granted in life and maybe that's just the reason we inflict that despair. Monotony of careers and patterns that we create in our lives make everything expected and also taken for granted. We need to feel the pain and the ugliness to remember the warmth, curiousity and beauty. What makes me happy is taking risks, doing new things, getting better at things I already know, kissing, red apples, going to the mall, my daughter:). Sand when it's snowing and snow in the summer.

I think of that country song "The Secret of Life". I love coming home to my two pugs and seeing how happy they get. I love reading a good book. I love the smell of brewing coffee in the morning. I love a simple smile or gentle kiss from my husband. I always tell him that it is the small things that mean the most such as that massage when I am tired or him tucking me in bed. I love the smell of rain as it drizzles...so many things!

A few very simple things that always brighten my day :)

- At the end of a solitaire game on windows...when the bouncing cards cover the entire green area.
- Getting asked for directions somewhere and actually knowing the answer.
- Reading something online that has no spelling or grammar mistakes.
- Finding a nice colorful business card to add to my collection
- Waking up to a "Best Answer" email (of course!)
- When it's been raining all day, but it just happens to stop the few times I have to go outside.

Watching mist descend down a mountain, the color purple, the sound of an oar slicing through the water before dawn, blueberries, an unexpected hug from a good friend, stepping onto the soil of a foreign country for the first time, childbirth, a good joke, double rainbows, realizing you still have plenty of daylight hours to burn, the first sled ride of the year, chocolate.......to name a few things.........

I like taking a drive with the Hubby going absolutely no where just talking and being together while we look around. I also find peace just sitting quietly looking at water, I used to go to the river as a kid and just sit there for hours watching the water run over the rocks. I have a pond in my backyard now.

For me it dont take much,I enjoy so much of life.I have learned that small things in life can give a person alot of enjoyment.I believe that a person needs to be able to do this.I see to much people who have alot going, that dont seem so happy. Why live big and be unhappy.A person that is doing this needs to step back and live with out much for awile.More appreciation for life will be developed.

Contentment in the real sense would make one really happy. But attaining that level of contentment in life is rather difficult. One needs to practice looking life in all 360 degree angles and try to compromise with what they get.

When you are an observer (and not in a position to help i.e. you are driving along or on a train) and you see someone offer some help to someone who needs it (i.e. helping someone get on a bus, picking up a teddy for a baby in a pushchair, running after a balloon for a child who has let it go, returning someone's umbrella/hat that someone has left on a seat). It really lifts my spirit that people still help each other.

Making other people happy. Get focus off of
self. Bringing my husband home from a near
fatal car accident with a brain injury and a
broken neck, makes me happy. I still have
him and can do for him.
