absolutly without question i pick a town called cuernavaca. it is about a 45 min. bus ride (nice buses with movies and servers!) from mexico city airport. they leave every 15 minutes or so. (this is the only time you really have to be aware! after coming thru customs you must go all the way down to the far end to the bus area and no one there, especially the help, wants to tell you where it is. they try and get you to take an expensive taxi. learn the word for bus - to cuernavaca and just keep insisting. you buy your ticket there. if i'm not mistaken, its gate 13 or 14) i went there several years ago and return whenever i get the chance. it is so beautiful. the name means eternal spring and it fits. there are nice places to stay, shop, dance (you can even take the kids to some). and the people are the friendliest on earth. my best friend is someone i met there. although alot of english isn't spoken everyone is always willing to help. i got lost walking to the town square once and a little old lady made sure i followed her! alot of mexico is not safe and you have to be careful there too but in general taking normal precations you will be fine. i always felt very safe and i travel alone many times. i don't know how long you are staying but you might look into renting a little house for a week. rooms can get pricy on the weekends although are quite reasonable during the week (you can even haggle with them then). i have stayed at several hotels and really liked carlota and maximillians. the rooms are more like huge apartments and they have a nice little outside restaurant. the last trip i rented a little house though and i loved it! i recommend los arcos at night for dinner. it has a kind of tj fridays menu, you sit outside under a canopy and is right in the downtown square where they have marichai bands walking around, markets, balloons. its like a fair. they have a live band and you can take the kids. soon you will be watching the customers salsa in between the tables! my friend teaches spanish by emmersion to foreigners and also chaporones tourists. if you need his service email me and i will be happy to give you his email and also web site. its nice to have someone that checks your bills to make sure you aren't being taken advantage of, the best place to exchange your money and knows "everyone" in town! let me know if you go and how you like it. wish i was going!!!

MMM do you want something chilly? Campeche is the best place it's in the Southeast part of Mexico, plus you have big cities around, you can easily get to Merida, Cancun, villahermosa, Chetumal, etc. Campeche is a small town where you can spend a lovely time with your family, there are many touristic attractions like: archeological zones, beaches, natural reserves, storical places such as bastions and walls from the Pirate's time, etc; you'll love the colonial style of the city and visit lovely small towns with typical lovely places. In general the Yucatan Peninsula has a lot to offer, you can also do the "Mayan route":Tabasco, chiapas, Campeche, yucatan and Quintana roo. You'll find several Hotels from nice Hostels, 1 star till 5stars and Special tourism hotels.

Monterrey city is the closest thing to first world there is in Mexico, but it is also surrounded by small old fashioned towns, so you can have all the commodities and still be within minutes of touristic attractions, exclusive shopping malls, theme parks and night life... it will also be the host for the universal culture forum this 2007 and it will be full of world renowned personalities, and if you are traveling with your family, it has also been declared the safest city (with a population over a million) in Latin America

pretty towns in Mexico there are a lot.. it depends on what you want to see and do.
My favorite spots as mexican is Guanajuato and Zacatecas, they are colonial cities with interesting architecture, great cultural enviroment and old gold - silver mines. In Guanajuato started the independence movement and you have tons of history, besides its very romantic and very cheap. Its also the house were Diego Rivera, (Frida Kahlos husband) was born.
If you are more in to the indigenist and natural beauty go to the state of Michoacán, where you can just grab a map and go touring lots of different towns, natural parks, lots of artcrafts and nearby the Paricutin wich is a volcano that was born in the middle of a town were there was nothing!
Also in the state of Jalisco, you could find some interesting spots, like Tequila.. (I think you could guess the interesting part there) and you will be able to listen to the best mariachi.
Good luck and safe trip!!

Maybe Puebla or Guadalajara, because are big cities with restaurants, shops, etc.
If you want a really pretty but small city go to Guanajuato, not much restaurants nor shops, but it is really nice!
Don't have time to recommend more, but good luck and happy 2007!!!

I am partial to Zihuatenejo (Ixtapa) ... but it really depends on what you are looking for.
Villa del Sol is top end there.
