Animal crossing (gamecube or DS) is the best game for that, or The Sims, but they're not free.
Here's my choice:
Neopets-you have a neohome, you travel around Neopia, meet other people if you're 13 and up, and adopt a cute neopet. Free, but can subscribe to premium.

its a fun mmorpg, lots of socializing, buy ur own houses (need to pay real money for that) kill stuff, leveling, and things like that... but its not 3D
