We live in CO. and as you probably heard from the news, we've been getting slammed one snow storm after another. One thing I've noticed when people park, they lift their wipers from their windshields before they go inside. What signifigance does this have?

Because those people are IDIOTS. It doesn't save or help at all. They still have to defrost their windshield. I've lost count of how many times I've seen these people with their wipers frozen in that position and it takes much longer before they can use them.

I grew up in the Northeast and I'd never seen anyone doing this until I moved to Virginia. Seems silly to me - you still have to scrape your windshield anyway. I've never had a wiper blade rip from being frozen to the glass.

You lift your wipers so that they don't get stuck to the windshield, and also so snow and ice doesn't stick to the wipers. It makes it easier to clean your windshield when you put the wipers back down.

I would take it to the dealer and pitch a fit. Wipers fall under the standards of the motor vehicle safety standards act and are supposed to be error free and last forever. But you are supposed to change the wiper blade once or twice a year

So that the wipers do not freeze to the windshield, and it keeps them from ruining wipers when they brush the snow off, just easier all around...

The wipers still freeze. Then you can't use them anyway since they won't adhere to the windsheild until they thaw. This is why cars have defrosting heaters. Also, leaving the wipers up makes them vulnerable to other damage.

My car has this thing called a defroster that keeps the ice off of my windshield and the wipers.

So they don't freeze to the windshield. It makes it easier to scrape ice off the entire windshield without damaging the wiper blades.

Most people are getting out of a WARM vehicle when they are parking. and that heat keeps the window warm for a bit after the car has been parked, especially since there is no wind from cooling it while driving. If it is snowing the snow melts on the window and then freezes to solid ice, as (car and window) cools down slowly.
