The best fabric for ties is silk.

The pattern will give you ideas. Go to JoAnns' Fabric store, not walmart. Walmart doesn't carry silk; AND they are dicontinuing their fabric departments after the first of the year in alot of stores !

I made one once for my nephew from a thin wool fabric (can't remember if it was also "lined" or not) that turned out well, but one thing to think about is how thick the knot would be if a thicker fabric is used. I guess ties have traditionally been silk, but generally a shiny synthetic is used these days.

I'd guess the advice about looking at a tie pattern at a fabric store (or maybe online) for the "suggested fabrics" on the back is the best idea.

The main thing I remember about making a tie is that it's cut on the bias of the fabric rather than the straight grain, which was a new idea to me at the time (and also required a longer piece of fabric!).

There may also be patterns these days for making just the hanging down parts and the knot of a tie... those seem to have an elastic or something as the part that actually goes under the collar but doesn't show (attached to the back of the knot somehow).

HTH, and good luck!

Go to fabric shop or Walmart fabric department. Look up the pattern for the ties in the accessory section of the pattern book. Get the number and pull the pattern from the drawer. Everyone does. Then, read the back where it gives the suggested fabrics. i think they list some stretch knits......... but it tells you what knid of lining material you need, too.
