Absolutely fit for power. My living standards have dramaticlly improved since labour came to power, and introduced economic stability in the UK, rather then the boom and bust policies of the tories.

No, for three reasons:

1. Like any party in power for a long time, Labour has grown arrogant and complacent, too used to getting their own way. This means that a lot of badly drafted laws get on the statute book, because they were pushed through without proper consideration or consultation just because the man or woman in charge wanted it. This is not a problem unique to Labour: the Conservatives suffered from it just as badly during their 18 years in office (- anyone for the Poll Tax?). Labour has huge ambitions but poor management skills, and any party that wants to be in government should, at the very least, be able to do the job. As things stand, Labour's record here is spotty at best.

2. Over time a government's true nature gets revealed: Labour at its core believes in big government. If it sees a problem, it wants a detailed law or regulation to solve it - that's its instinct. Unfortunately, that has led to a blizzard of rules and regulations and a massive increase in bureaucracy, with most power of decision taken away from the individual and the local and passed up the line to ministers and civil servants. (The prime example of this is the Child Support Agency, which even Labour now plans to replace with something smaller and less bureaucratic.)

3. Labour has presided over a corrosion of trust and belief in politicians: people no longer believe what the government tells them, even if it's true. This matters, because if people no longer trust the mainstream parties, they will turn to extremists like the BNP. Westminster should be trying to find ways to interest the public. Labour has been very bad at this, and has made things worse by their frequent use of spin.

Don't get me wrong: the Labour government has done some good (vastly more money into schools and the NHS, peace in Northern Ireland, a stable economy) and in many ways has been better than the hopeless Major government. But is it fit for power now? IMO, no.

New Labour, under Blair or under Prescott or under Brown are absolutely not fit to rule the country.
Are the Conservatives fit to govern? No, definitely not!
Who else is there? Nobody!

So what will we get? Another totally shambolic Government!
