help with aol instant messaging trick?

so i downloaded aim 6, the old version, my friend told me that u were able to do a little trick by clicking on someones name to show the time they log on and off , in other words to monitor them when they go on and off....
sooo is there a way to do this neat little trick in aim 6? It seems to be difficult now there is the option of getting messages when ur offline...

apparently in the old version, u would click on the person who is offline, send a "blank" message, it would say they are not available, then u just keep that box/window open until they log on and off and it tells u the time they were on and off

i've never heard of that...how do u do that??
