I'm thinking maybe this is not the best way to alter patterns. I say that b/c every Jo-Ann's store I've called for the 'basic' pattern, the person asks me...you want to make a what? Toile. (Twall) In short, you use the 'basic' pattern to create a 'body print' of yourself. From there you can alter any pattern to your exact measurements. What do you think? Worth it?

toile actually has two different definations. The most frequent use of the word toile is describing a fabric print that is an off white back ground with a repeating pattern, of fairly complex scenary. usually done in blacks, blues, etc. very country french or old english. been around for centuries.

Secondly toile can also be a test dummy for sewing made of muslin. you can make a toil with any pattern at the sewing stores. You make it first before you cut and fit the real thing. it is like a practice piece. It simply allows you to custom fit a piece that you are making. There is no one master toil for your exact measurements. It will depend no what you are making.

It is more important in sewing to have a very concise list of your measurements handy whenever you are buying patterns.

You may also want to invest in one of those sewing body dummy things. Usually they are adjustable to some degree for fitting.
