what version of psp is best to buy.?..1.5 or later?

i am looking to buy a psp.and on looking round it seems that the 1.5 jap version is the best to buy is this the case or is it better to just buy from the shops..ie game and so on for a later version..if i am correct the 1.5 allows ..homebrew.?..can you play later version umd games on this version..?i also intend to join site that offers unlimited downloads so with this would it be better to stick to a shop bought version...many thanks for any advice
