I was talking to this guy, and he said his porch was really more of a stoop. What is the difference?

And while I'm at it, what is the difference between a porch, a deck, a patio, a lanai, a veranda...

Also, not to sound racist, but why does it seem that only black people ever talk about a stoop anyway?

Technically, a stoop is just a landing at the exit of a doorway. They're usually just about 3' by 5', concrete pads that meet the finished floor elevation.

A porch is a larger version, usually capable of being occupied.

A stoop is basically another term for a step- so the difference would be that a porch is longer/larger than a stoop/step!

A stoop is the landing and stairs, covered or uncovered, leading to the main entrance of a house

While a porch is a larger cement, stone, or brick landing and walkway installed at or near the front entry.

Seems like people from wisconsin and that area tend to call it a stoop. We here in wyoming call it a porch if it is more like a deck but a step if it is just stairs leading into the house. I believe it is (like a lot of other terms) purely geographic.

a stoop is not a black thing, it is from the south. a stoop is a small landing outside the door, not large enough to sit on in a chair. hardly ever larger than 3feetX4feet.
