Hi - I'm beginning to play cello and looking for a first instrument. I am leaning towards buying a silent electric cello as a first instrument. The reasons being - I live in an apt. with limited space, sound-sensitive neighbors and roomie, and I will probably be playing at odd hours. However, if an electric cello is going to make me develop "bad habits" as a beginner or differs in some great way from a "real" acoustic cello, then I would just as soon buy an acoustic. Does anyone have any advice?

Being a music major in college, I had a good friend who played cello. He hated electric cellos. They will give you bad habits. You won't understand how to really "tune" one. You won't have the right feel for your instrument. Every instrument is so different, even the makers. As you get better and play more, you'll understand it. The electric will never give you the same sounds that a real one will give you. It will sound a little "tinny" to people, it won't have that bold, rich sound.

If sound is a problem, see about renting in a music studio or even muffling your cello. You can make a "sound proof" make shift thing in your place by putting extra padding in your room around the doors, windows and any adjacent walls. Blankets work really well. Don't play in tiled areas in the home, they will be more accoustic, and inhance your sound.

Also, if anything, "pluck" your music and when it's "all clear" use your bow.

Hope this helps!

Cello For Beginners

I've been playing cello for the past 10 years, so welcome aboard ^_^

recently i purchased the yamaha svc 100 and its amazing. i've been having difficulty adjusting to not having any vibrations but the sound is incredible. depending on the brand that you buy, it'll either come with or you can make another purchace of headphones that you can use with the silent electric cello.

i am very bias towards the acoustic because it is much more personal and you can get a richer, warmer sound. the acoustic like i said, you dont get any vibrations from it but you can get a wider variation of tones ((you can also purchase pedals for a greater variety)) it all depends on what your looking for. ^_^

best of luck!

an electric cello is definately not good for a beginner, its shape is different and might get u into a habit of more of an electric guitar sound

Sweetie....cramped quarters and close neighbors???...I'd suggest taking up piano (keyboard, with good headphones).

Unless you have access to a practice studio close by, I'd reconsider the cello.
