Alfred the Great saved Britain from being overrun by the vikings and saved the English language from being destroyed. He ruled from 871-899 AD. Check out this website for a bit more info: http://www.royal.gov.uk/output/Page25.asp

Oh. My. God. A lot of the list people are giving you doesn't fall in your time frame! You mean the Middle Ages, right?

Here's my suggestions:
Ghengis Khan.
Charlemagne.
King Richard the Lion-Hearted.
Saladin.

That's all you're getting from me. Go and google.

I vote Charlemagne. Created the Holy Roman Empire and started (sorta) the Carolingian Renaissance. I think he even learned to read.

Charlemagne. He DID NOT start the Roman Empire it had already fell, but was crowned King on Christmas day by the Pope. The purpose was to have his army for the church use. This lead to the crusades.

Yes he did learn to read, he also started "palace schools" so others could learn to read well enough to follow in the answers that were needed in church services. This is considered his most important achievement although he did succeed in battle.

I would do a report on the Punic wars, maybe about Hannibal and the elephants. I don't know if that falls in that time period or not, though, but it's still a very interesting subject.
