I know they were used way back when lights wasn,t in yet.My Mom said her Mom used them by the bed at night when you had to go to the bathroom,and most bathrooms were outside...They were used for reading,and kerocene lamps were used also but candles were used more because the kerocene was expensive back then....Now days they are used for scents to smell the house,but back then they were just wax,no scents...
