There is no cure for a cold. Initial studies of zinc suggested it might shorten the course of colds, but subsequent studies have failed to substantiate. Vitamin C and others have all failed to show any treatment might be useful in shortening the course of the disease. Nasal sprays such as phenylephrine can be useful decongestants, or you may find pseudoephedrine by mouth might be adequate. Actually, in most cases, the best symptom relief comes not with drugs but with the old-fashioned treatments. Chicken soup, hot tea, and careful inhalation of steam offer the best relief.

I swear by Zicam nasal spray or nasal swabs when someone in my family gets a cold. Most of the time, if we start taking it as soon as cold symptoms show up, the symptoms only last a day or two.

Take Zinc lonzenges. They shorten the duration of your cold, especially if you take them at the very first signs. Also, drink lots of green tea, and chamomile tea, and stand over a steaming pan of water and breath in the steam. Eat chicken soup, get plenty of rest and drink lots of water and juice.
