because vending machines need to see something specific in the slot without exceptions otherwise a piece of metal the size of a quarter would probably work. the weight is probably just a little bit different so it won't take it.

Vending machines only accept coins of the correct weight and shape.

I've been in retail for over twenty years and every place I've worked at never accepted Canadian coins...because they're not US currency so I'm surprised you found cashier's that take them.

I can't remember which way it goes, but one set of coins (American or Canadian) is magnetic, and the other isn't. The vending machines in the country with magnetic coins have magnets to attract the coins, and in the other country they don't.

Sorry I can't remember which is which!

I think because they are lighter, but I love Canadian quarters, I collect them, they are neat, especially having been there, I have found a few Canadian quarters and want to go back some day. :)

I think there is a slight difference in the weight of the coin. Frequently someone slips me a Canadian coin in my change & I don't have very good luck passing it on to someone else. I guess I'll have to visit canada someday just to get rid of them!
