Why is the shortest day not in the dead centre of the period of GMT as it must get lighter at the same rate that it got darker.
Why do we have to wait until the end of march before we put our clocks to BST, 93 days after the shortest day. We put our clocks back to GMT 51 days before the shortest day. Why the difference.

Because it gives another month of longer working days. Instead of getting dark at six pm at the Autumn eqinox, it gets dark at seven and we have that hour for the next month until GMT comes back.

Are you asking about Daylight Savings? If so here is a website that answers DST questions. The shortest and longest days of the year are not based on GMT, but on the seasons. As for why is it not in the middle, I have no clue, it's just how it was set up.
