The American civil war was caused in part by the topic of slavery. Slavery was so much a part of the southern economy (all of the US actually) and way of life that to end it would cause much harm to those who owned and profited from slavery. Southerners wanted to continue slave labor in the south as well as new territories and states being formed at the time. Northerners wanted not to end slavery, but to not allow it to spread any further than where it already existed.
The interpretation by each side of the others point of view, as well as long developing differences and resentments of each other lead South Carolina to secede from the union followed by 6 other southern states prior to Abraham Lincoln's inauguration.

There is a video series from Annenburg Media which covers American History. The episodes about the civil war are pretty good. You must register to view the site's content, but it's worth the few minutes.
