Your question , although simple in theory is quite complicated whe it comes down to actually making a monetary decision Auto purchases are the second largest purchase a person makes in their lifetime, second to buying a home.

I will give as simple an answer as possible, while contributing to your inquiry. Today's consumer enjoys and can take advantage of the advanced state of technology of the automobile industry.

It is safe and responsible to say that almost every car maker produces good vehicles. Different from the times where quality was an issue, that is no longer the case.

Nowadays, the decision on which car is best for you will depend on a few things:
A) What are your driving needs? (School, work, light, heavy, etc.)
B) What is your budget?
C) Do you feel physically comfortable in the vehicle?

Once you have answered these questions, this will give you a more direct approach on what you want, thereafter the task will be getting the most value (options, features, safety) for your money.

If you need specific answers go to Consumer Reports and they will give you owner satisfaction surveys on which brand is best per segment (SUV's, Luxury, Sport, Minivan,Compact, etc.) Good luck.

Although there are 2 thumbs down for the first answer...I have to agree with Saturn being a great car.
I bought a used 93 Saturn SC1 in '99. That little car got me from VA to NY (7 hour drive) multiple times over 3 years. On top of it all, it drove from VA to CA over 3 days with absolutely no problems. Like any other car, general maintenance is key, but I am truly surprised my little car is still running after owning it for almost 8 years, and some minor repairs later.

Depends on what you are looking for, if you want a simple point a to point b vehicle the chevrolet cobalts are pretty reasonable. If you want an SUV a late 90's to early 00's are very reliable and easy on gas if you get the inline 6 engine. The new ford 500's are very nice vehicles with available all wheel drive, and reasonably priced.

Any American brand prior to 1975. They all went downhill after that.

Avoid anything foreign, since there's never been a foreign car made that can compete with any pre '75 American car for performance, ease of maintenance, low cost repairs, reliability, or pure driving pleasure.

Honda, Toyota, Lexus, Acura are the tops. Nissan used to be up there too until their quality took a plunge. I wouldn't touch a Nissan with a 10 foot pole.
