in todays day and age i am surprised they last over a year

It is very possible. Marriage is all about understanding, forgiveness, tolerance, and love.
It can last less than a year, when the both parties are not mature to handle marital issues.
Some marriages fail because the don't have God in it.

I married December 30 1998 at about 4 pm and the marriage was over by 5 am the next day. He vanished into no where and I went home. TRUE STORY!!!

Britney Spears' first marriage only lasted less than one day. Some people are immature and don't realize what marriage is all about. It is about more than just sex. It is about mutual love, commitment to each other, putting the needs of your beloved ahead of your own, and too many other things too numerous to name .

Unfortunately, when we're dating (we refers to human beings in general), we are always trying to put on our best appearances. After getting comfortable with someone, we "let down our hair" as-it-were and we don't try so much, so often to impress our partners.
If the couple didn't live together prior to the marriage, they might end up shocked at how the other person lives and the little idiosyncrasies they didn't know before.
Also unfortunately, it's not that uncommon.

Well, she maybe was in love with the idea of getting married, not being married. Sorry, it sounds harsh, but some women want to have that wedding whether they love their husband to be or not. Maybe all her friends were married and she was just keeping up with the jones' or maybe she misses being single.

I know it sounds crazy. My sister marriage lasted 3 days.Some people are not ready for it. It's funny how they would go though all that just to give up so fast. I never understood it myself.

People have unrealistic expectations for marriage. They expect their relationship and their spouse to be perfect, and that's not going to happen. Marriages take work.

One or both weren't interested in making it last to begin with. you have to be totally comitted from the beginning and not go in with the attitude, "well if it doesn't work out or he/she does something i don't like we can always get a divorce." You have to be totally comitted for life before getting married.

Well in some cases, people cheat and that ruins everything. In other cases, people think they are in love and then when they get married and live together and spend more time together, they realize how different they really are.
