Depends on the size of your project. I worked for Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems and we had projects as large as they come. We used Clearcase for everything and it worked out well...especially considering the other softwares we had to integrate with. If you're doing something small though like a collaberation with a few other engineers there's some good free tools on-line....some friends and I use CVSNT with Tortoise...all free...not miraculously good, but it get's the job done. Clearcase is high-end so you pay the price and can do anything....so it depends on the scalability of your project. There's also some small scale CVS tools on-line that you can pay for if dependability is a big issue....

I've heard Perforce is good. I'm currently using CM Synergy, which has a steep learning curve.
