If you're going to be in Europe for a while, you should think of getting a rail pass. Train is probably cheapest even if you don't end up getting one.

However, if you really want to be frugal, you can hitch hike. I've done it before, and see how I've turned out!

Probably with a train, there are 3 trains per day from Helsinki to St Petesburg, so my guess is that there are also 3 trains going the opposite direction.
