Well, I've only read the one - in English - All Quiet on the Western Front. Being the best of one isn't much of an achievement, but it is one of the profoundest anti-war novels of the 20th century. Excellent film, too.

"All Quiet on the Western Front" gives a realistic portrayal of WWI. Told from the German perspective, Remarque's finest work, in my opinion, the novel explores the themes of loyalty, brotherhood, friendship, and nationalism. The relationship between Paul and Kat is so incredibly touching, from the roast goose to Kat's death, when Paul died inside as well. It is intricatly written, and made me cry more than once. "All Quiet on the Western Front" is definatly Remarque's best novel.

Still All Quiet on the Western Front (Im Westen nichts Neues!) - unique and true. I also appreciate Arch of Triumph and have to pay tribute to the original version of Zeit zu Leben, Zeit zu sterben (Time to Live, Time to Die) which I think is currently not available in English - in Germany until 1989(!) there was only a censored version available - Jews were turned into 'Aryans', SS-men into simple Landser, the crimes committed by the Wehrmacht were erased from the text - RIDICULOUS!

"Im Westen nichts Neues" (All Quiet on the Western Front) is justly famous for painting a stark picture of the horror of trench warfare in WWI. No wonder the Nazis hated it for showing their propaganda of the heroic struggle of the WWI soldiers to be just a cheap lie.
I also liked "Die Nacht von Lissabon" (The Night in Lisbon), a novel about refugees from the Nazis stranded in then neutral Portugal and desperately trying to get out of Europe from there.
