I really enjoyed Deliverance- it is intense, and not at all about cannibles- whoever told you that is smoking crack. I'll give you the basic plot.
Four friends go on a rafting trip- and it goes terribly wrong. They get split up, and there is a scene where one of them gets sexually assaulted by some hillbillies (if you've ever heard some one say 'You've got a purdy mouth'- it's from this movie)
Burt Reynolds comes to the rescue, and one of the hillbillies gets shot... I won't tell you everything, because that would spoil it, but if you can handle what I just told you, you can handle the rest of the movie.
I reccomend it- it's kindof a classic, but only if this type of movie is your thing. But it is in no way scary in the 'horror movie' kind of way.
Enjoy!

Its a classic with Burt Reynols not cannibles, inbred cornfed hillbilly backwoods type folks more of a suspence movie than scary its an adventure of buddies running into troubles in a land they know little of and only one way out keep going see it it is an all time great.

I don't think it's necessarily "scary" in the same vein as something like "Halloween" or "The Exorcist". It may very well give you the creeps though. It's about a bunch of middle-aged guys from Atlanta who go on a weekend river-rafting trip in the Appelachian mountains. They come across a few backwoods folk and let's just say that the group of guys get on their bad side. I don't remember any cannibalism, but there is a gay rape scene that is disturbing to say the very least. If anything, the movie will make you wary of white trash.

Yes, "Deliverance" is a very good movie. It's not for the faint of heart, but it's not scary in a "horrorshow" kind of way. It's more suspense and drama, an on-the-edge-of-your-seat thriller. There are some scenes that will test you.

Good luck.

***HEY vanamont7**** If people like that exist, I've never met them. I'm sure there are homosexual rapists outside of prisons, but I'm never met them (thank God). And, yes, I've been "down south" in rural areas.

It is a movie that features men raping men. Considered shocking when the movie war released (people didn't even TALK about gays), it is still very disturbing. If graphic rape scenes aren't your thing, then I'd not watch it. It also features graphic scenes were men are killed.

Your friend needs to kicked in the a**, either for being stupid, or for lying to you.

Mmm, Deliverance is a drama movie, not a horror movie, BUT it is a very good drama movie. It is a story about backwaters country family feud gone out of hand and a group of travelers caught in the middle of it. It is EXTREMELY good!

its a classic. It has some racy stuff in it like rape, sodomy, etc. not about cannibals, about some backcountry rednecks that are inbread and a few guys that go on a boating trip to relax and it gets wacky. its a good movie. burt reynolds, the guy who plays otis in superman is in it.
ding da ding ding ding ding.... deliverance banjo playing...

Its a classic you should watch it. :-)

It's a parody of the Vietnam war and very good, hard to watch in places but worth it. The battling Banjos is a great piece of cinema and worth watching it just for that alone. "Now squeal like a pig". You might want to avoid hillbillies after it.

If your favourite movie is "Titanic" or "Pretty women" you migt not like this, but if you like real challenging movies then defintely see it. You could try the movie "southern comfort" which is simialr but less distrurbing.

It's a good movie for it's time done in the 1970's. It has nothing to do with cannibals.
It's not that scary as it's about 4 guys on a hiking & rabids trip.

Deliverance is about a lot of stuff...men getting violated by other men, murder, all while city slickers are on vacation.

If you're not sure about watching it, I am sure your local public library should have a copy of the book by James Dicky. You could read it first.
