My husband is a pharmacist and I have vaginally delivered two children - I would strongly urge you to not use a laxative or a suppository. A stool softener(Colace-sp?) would be your best bet - they are totally safe, cheap, and over-the-counter - get the generic kind. They are not absorbed into your system, they will not interfere with any other meds, and are fine even if you are nursing. Just read the directions on the bottle and play with the dosage until you are going comfortably. Beyond that, it will just take a little time - if the pain is terrible - don't be afraid to call your OB, that is why they are there. Additionally, make sure that you are keeping yourself VERY well hydrated, especially if you are nursing. And get up and walk around as much as possilbe - that will help get your bowels going. Good luck!

I had my baby 3 weeks ago also and know how you are feeling
the other people that answered your ? are right you must use that squirt bottle they gave you at the hospital if your are breast feeding watch what you take as it will pass to your baby. The hospital i was at gave me prune juice and it passed to my baby that was only 5 days old so be careful what you take, if you have to much trouble and keep holding your bowel movements than you just may end up back at the hospital so try and get it over with you should almost healed by now but could take another couple of weeks to really heal, hey and after a shower try the blowing the hair dryer it helps to heal the stitches.

Get some more fiber in your diet and drink at least 8 to twelve glasses of water a day. When I was in the hospital after my son was born they put me on stool softeners and they made having a bowel movement worse(this is my own experience). I seem to remember that this might be a sign of something wrong, but it has been a long time ago. Good luck to you.

Call your doctor. After I had my son I was given some stool softeners that help relieve constipation and making going easier (I had a huge number of stitches with my son). Don't take anything over the counter without a doctor's okay, because it may not be gentle enough for your body since you're still recovering from the birth.

Good luck!

It will hurt yes when going #2, just try and relax the best you can and wait as long as you can to go #2 so that when you sit on the toliet it will come out by itself, also try using laxatives, they help alot. Try not to use n e muscles to force it out. If the hospital gave you a squirt bottle for you to wash your stiches with be sure after everyone you rinse well, otherwise you will be prone to infection with your stiches.

The best thing for you to do and this may not be what you wanna hear is take a laxative. This will help you poop but also make it easier for you so that you will not put so much strain into your bowl movements. If you would like to go the natural way just eat things that contain alot of fiber. Fiber helps our bodies digest food much easier and faster and is the natural laxative. Good Luck!

Metamucil to the rescue! It's a lot gentler than laxatives. You may be constipated from any pain meds you got in the hospital and that area hurts like hell after childbirth. I cried with joy when I was able to poop.

You need to call your doctor and ask him/her what laxitive you could use that will make going to restroom easier for you! When I had my son, my doctor prescribed Dulcolax. It is a laxitive that doesn't make you be on the toilet constantly! Don't be to alarmed about not "pooping" for a few days. Your hormones are still out of wack and your body knows best for you! Don't worry, it will only get better! Try using "Tucks" pads for those stitches!

The hosptial should have given you a soft squirt bottle. If so, fill it with warm water, and before you need to go poop, Squirt the are first. This will soothe it for you. If they didnt give a squirt bottle, try making one, but use that method. It helped me on my forst delivery. Or you could use a stool softner to help it. If you are breast feeding talk toyour doctor!

High fiber foods and lots of water and stool softeners. And don't forget the witch hazel for the stitches down there. Very soothing. Good luck!
