They use too in the old days because waitress's didn't get a wage so they lived off of the tips they earned..so now why are they still doing it ontop of wages? I dont see other cashiers or min.wage job worker's getting tips, like grocery store clerks...so why should the waitress's??

Ya actually I have served and SORRY for those places too cheap too pay a decent wage, maybe waitress's shouldn't work there than if they know they won't get paid much instead of relying on the public too support them, than go home and *****, maybe they should get another job instead of whining all freakin day, or being disgusting pigs

You have NEVER served, and I can tell, because you are ignorant...get mad at that all you want, I don't care...you DON'T know what its like to be a server. I make 2.13 an hour. That's right, after taxes, do you know how small my paycheck is? Do you know what it's like to wait on a table from 6 p.m until 2 a.m, have them rack up a 350 dollar bill, and leave you a 5 dollar tip? Or better yet, do you know what its like to have someone walk out on a 65 dollar bill and you have to pay the money from your tips? That night, I left a 10 hour shift with 20 dollars. Thats what, 2 dollars an hour, plus my 2.13 an hour, so 4.13 an hour, with taxes taken out? Yea, I do all of that just so I can pay my way through college. It's people like you that we hate to wait on, because you expect way to much and couldn't get off your butt to cook a meal, so you want us to do all this work, and you don't want to tip us? Maybe you should think about what a waitress goes through, how much she does for you, and how many RUDE customers she has in one night. Despite all the rude people however, I bet you she's still friendly with you.

unlike other jobs- dining out is a service and a convenience for you so you don't have to cook. In a service field like a waiter/waitress they are there for you to have a good if not an excellent experience. The food industry doesn't make a lot of money unless you get a niche market or the food is really good. Besides I don't know if it holds true anymore but the IRS already hits them for the 15% suggested tip. They have to not only just know what you order but to make sure it is prepared as requested. To make sure you the customer are not in want of everything and try to anticipate what the diner may want. So unlike a cashiers and grocery clerks who help to move the crowd. It is about the experience. It is sad to see though that today that many restaurants, the waiters/waitresses do not show the same service as those did years ago. It takes sometimes going to a higher priced restaurant to get good service

hey that is your opinion. I get u and i don't get u. Yes other people don't get tips, but if u don't like tippin don't go out to eat. I was a waitress and it's hard tryin to handle like 4 tables on a saturday night and u have a ashole who is complain about everything. And it's just common curtisy to leave at least one dollar. That one dollar 2 u may be nothin but that dollar may be the dollar they need. Waitress get paid crap. 2.13 that the taxes take and if everybody thought like u do, then there would be no waitors and waitress, because they would quit because they would get no money. It is a job just like every other job. Cashiers get paid like 7 8 dollars and hours waiters get 2. They did it in the old days and they still do it. If they give u bad service don't tip if they do, don't be a cheapstake. leave a dollar. It just seems like you just wanna be mean.

Ewwww, you must eat a lot of stuff you don't want to. I serve and only make $2.13 an hour. Forewarning, if your going to try to not tip your server, don't go to the same restaurant twice. We will honestly let every other server there know and get a good look at you, and next time your going to have your bread rubbed in a not so pleasant place, or your going to be eating something that was on the floor just 30 seconds ago. And yes, that is disgusting, but it is great to see someone that left you a 5% tip the last time they came bite into a piece of snot! Best of luck! Just a thought also, if everyone gets fed up and decides to actually quit (following your advice, of course) I guess everyone would actually have to cook because there would be no one left to help them.

Most state laws allow for restaurants minimum wage for tip earns to be around $3.00/ hour. That way the restaurant gets cheap labor and the waitress/waiter still get a little more money. The government will tax a waitress/waiter so much per hour of what they "should" make in tips even if they don't. I always leave a tip but not the fifteen percent. It all depends on the service I receive and I never eat at a place that has mandatory tipping.

I always tip at least 15 percent unless the waitress is rude. I don't get upset if food is bad or wrong because 90 percent of the time it is the jackass freaking cooks being dueche bags.
Anyone who has ever worked in a full service restraunt knows that the customers who are bitchy are the ones who don't leave good tips, and so those customers who choose to be jack asses or general pain in the asses, you get what you deserve...shitty ******* servicend food that hs been defiled in some obnoxious way that you will never know about. And you fuckers who don't tip deserve every ******* bit of it!!!

Waitstaff typically get paid less than minimum wage because it is expected they will make up the difference with the tips they earn from GOOD service. If I get good service I always tip. If not, I don't. If you are in a position to help those who are struggling in service jobs that don't pay well, who have chosen to work rather than collect welfare or other social services then I think that we should encourage them for any good service they provide. Waitstaff have difficult jobs dealing with the public who nowadays have such high expectations and attitudes of entitlement, who are rude and look down upon them, not to mention being on their feet and carrying heavy loads for their whole shifts, I often tip more than necessary since I am just so thankful that I no longer HAVE to have a job like that. Not everyone could hack the jobs of waitstaff and still be expected to smile and be polite.

Because they are grateful for servers and the people that work in restaurants have long hard hours and are on there feet 24/7. Maybe some get paid minimal but others don't. Don't be such a cheapskate. A dollar tip won't hurt you.

Waitresses are horribly underpaid. Like, $3.09 an hour.

Newspaper carriers aren't paid a lot, but they get tipped at Christmas. Don't you leave tips for your hair stylist? Or the regular UPS person at Christmas? They make a ton of money, but it's a lot of driving and hauling around your gifts. Do you tip cabbies?

Try being a waitress sometime. I guarantee you will squeal with glee the first time you bus a table and discover a tip.

servers don't make minimum wage, they make like $2 an hour, and that money is taken by taxes, so they dont' generally even get a paycheck. being tipped has nothing to do with the "old days." obviously you've never waited tables, and from the sound of it you're the kind of person waiters hate having to serve. if i were you i'd be careful, if you eat at the same restaurant a lot they'll remember you don't tip and you'll get horrible service or "sneezers."
