I don't mean for a party. I'm looking for songs that are about the concepts and ideas of New Year's - new beginnings, changes, transitions. Also, I need songs with a beat and rhythm - they can be minor-key, serious songs, but nothing maudlin or sappy, please.

Whatever means something to you, I'd like to know about.

Thanks!

The New Year by Death Cab for Cutie. It's an absolutely amazing song that I play at midnight now every year. It's about just letting go and celebrating to me.

some lyrics:

"i wish the world was flat like the old days
then i could travel just by folding a map
no more airplanes, or speedtrains, or freeways
there'd be no distance that can hold us back."

great song

Auld Lang Syne comes to mind first. Just like starting over by John Lennon. Beginnings by Chicago. Hope this helps.

This is an old one: "What Are You Doing New Year's Eve" It was recorded by Ella Fitzgerald and also a "Doo Wop" group called the Orioles. Very romantic IMHO.

Also from the Doo Wop era:. "After New Year's Eve" by the Heartbeats.
