Because they... like to read...?
Where I live, the "punks" seem to hang at Starbucks, and it's the most contradictory thing I've ever seen.
Not to stereotype or anything, but an observation of mine- nowadays, kids who start out too geeky and booksmart to be accepted (upper middle class whiteys whose moms didn't teach them about makeup or who are too shrimpy to play football) can easily gain acceptance by changing up their look a little and listening to so-called "punk" music. So a lot of "emo/punk kids" are the slightly larger versions of the nerds. And I'm not saying that's a bad thing- I'm an enormous nerd. It just strikes me as odd that punk, which started out as a subculture in which being accepted was the LEAST important thing, is now being used as a means to GAIN acceptance.
So, in conclusion, because they like to read.

OK, i think this is a stereotype that has popped into your head. That's like asking "Why do old people hang out at laundry mats?" Could it be that they, too, like to read? It MAY be a different subject that most wouldn't check up on, but, HEY, who's to say what's right, RIGHT? I don't mean to be rude with this answer, I just think that people deserve more thought than that.(FYI-I am NOT an EMO.)

That must be just your store. It isn't that way where I live. Perhaps you could ask them yourself?
