that's a nice size tank...
it depends what kind of fish you're going to put in there.. If salt water you'd need canister filtration... and large freshwater fish, you'd need canister filtration as well...
if you're going to have live plants in there, with small freshwater fish, you can just use a simple powerhead or a small filter that will make a current...
maybe this might help

she put potting soil in there with the tank... but i wouldn't do it.. it causes more trouble than it's worth.. there are other options.

essentially in any tank, you want to aim for the water to be turned over at least 7 times an hour, with 10 being the ideal, and this is figured out through the ghp listed on the individual filters, for instance, on my 30 gallon, i have a magnum 350, which cycles 350 gallons per hour (gph), leaving my tank cycled 11.7 times an hour (i tend to go a bit over) in my 125 i have a custom built sump overflow, and that cycles roughly 11 times an hour.
though if you're looking for a cheaper filter and you have a 135 gallon tank, a custom sump would be out of the question. just figure out what gph you need to aim for (with a 135 gallon tank, you'd need about 945 total gallons cycled an hour to achieve the 7 times an hour cycling, so with that information, I would personally go price filters and compare the different brands, aiming for the 945 gph total.
however, i would not recommend skimping too much on the quality of the filter you buy, due to the catastrophic things that can happen when one breaks. Better brands tend to have better warranties as well.
Also, with your tank depth, you may need to look into extension tubes for your filters. This will vary from brand to brand.

Aquaclear filters are the best value for larger tanks. They are made by Hagen and a mix of 300's and 500's (depending on the fish you want) is the way to go. AC 300s go for around $55, AC 500s are around $80.

I would say BIO-WHEEL is best (everyone has their opinion) AND I respect that.
You could use 2 bio-wheels 330, and a power head- 402 for after water changes for quick clean up.
remember good filtration is a must to keep your fish healthy.
