Hi, if you have got central heating this could be why, if you havent then i dont know why your bills are so high other than the gas prices going up. Try getting an electric heater and putting it buy you, get one that uses about 1p per min. Then get a microwave so you dont need to use the cooker and the gas. When we lived in a flat our gas used to go down quicker than the electricity because of the cooker. An microwave is just as good, Thats if you want to keep the bills down.

i've been told that prepay meters are much more expensive than being billed monthly/quarterly. My Mum let her gas meter totally run out during the summer and left it a few weeks before topping up it cost her over £40 in standing charges and she only got about £5 in gas

We have a gas meter, 12 radiators on almost 24/7 always warm, also a gas hob and we pay £70.00 per month for gas. Change your gas supplier and get a credit meter fitted, and a monthly plan.

I had the same problem and I phoned up British Gas, they told me I owed them £31,000!!! I told them to re-calculate and they called back and said, sorry, it was really £64,000!!! They had been taking money out of my top up to re-coup this ficticious debt.
I decided to bypass them and go straight to Energywatch. They were brilliant, no waiting in lines to be be connected they deal with you instantly. It turns out British Gas actually owed me £94.
Their website is www.energywatch.org.uk or call them on 08459 06 07 08
Good Luck

Top up cards are a very expensive way to pay, the standing charge is huge, why don't you pay quarterly and buy the stamps instead, so when your bill comes i you'll have enough.

If you are using gas normally you had better inform who ever your getting gas from and have your meter checked, maybe your neighbours are on your gas supply. Get it checked ASAP
