if you cant use iTUnes to do it then its a little tricky I'll try to explain.
1. plug iPod into computer
2. find the drive for your iPod when you open up "my computer"
3. on the toolbar go to Tools and selecet "folder options"
4. click the "View" tab
5. click the circle next to "show hidden files and folders" then click "ok"
6. you will see the folder called "iPod_Control" open that up
7. copy the folder called "music" to your desktop

this folder contains all your music, only problem is that the files will no longer be named correctly but will have names like BXKB.mp3 or some random letters. But they will still play and should still have the id tag info still correct

Go to ilounge.com and download one of the good programs for backing up your music from iPod to iTunes. Once you do that, you can reformat and reload the songs as you like.
