"Applications" are the uses your science project can be used towards.

For example, if your project was to show how sand can be used to filter out certain polutants from river water, the "application" could be that communities can use this science to help provide more and cleaner drinking water.

If your project was to show how sunlight affected the growth of a bean plant, the application would be to help farmers learn how to grow more food product.

In other words, they want you to think about how you might apply the science learned beyond the classroom.

In many science fairs, the application portion of the project counts very heavily. For example, if a lazy, sadistic kid decided he would have a project where starving hamsters fight each other for food, just to see which animal lives, the judges wouldn't think that there would be any good application for the data gathered.

Applications would be the things that a certain technology can be used for. For instance, the applications for laser technology range from data storage and data readingn to weapons targeting.

So the technology is the raw science (not really, but you can think of it that way) and the application is how people use it.

Does that help?
