Read the translators' preface and the copyright page. One or the other might tell you how many verses you may quote until you need their permission. I know the NIV is something like 55 verses or something. If it doesn't say, email the publisher and ask. Or use a public domain version, like the old KJV. Then you don't have to worry about it.
