In a thunder and lightning storm, you see the lightning first. Taht is because light travels faster then sound does. Then you hear the thunder. The lengh of time (seconds) between when you see the lightning and hear the thunder depends on how far away the lightning is. You can figure out how far away the lightning bolt is: as soon as you see the lightning, start counting (1 MISSISSIPPI, 2 MISSISSIPPI, 3 MISSISSIPPI, ect.) until you hear the thunder. You should say one "mississippi" per second. When you hear the thunder, however high you counted to is how far away the lighting is (miles). For example, if you counted to 4 mississippi, then the lightning is 4 miles away.
