Is there an easy solution, which doesn't involve returning the bit?

The diameter of the shank on my bit is.5".

The manufacturer makes a cheap collet for my needs. I would make Justin Time's the best answer but must wait at least four hours after posting.

Check the router manufacturer to see if a bigger collet is available. If the router bit shank is larger than .5" it's probably best used in a router table or a shaper (if you can find one it fits). I would not recommend grinding the bit down, not even by a machinist.

It might be possible to change the shank holder on your router to fit the larger bit, but unless you have a source, the best bet is to get a router blade that fits your shank. At the speed of a router, I would not do anything stupid like trying to reduce the shank size.
